I think "recommendation" will be a killer feature of the site, even if it doesn't approach the philosophy behind letterboxd (being a social site).
Moreover now that you are at the beta stage, meaning fewer users, less probability of "friends", the recommendation of a movie based on my most liked movies or the highest rating, it'll be a great way of discovering new movies.
I know that technically it will very challenging or maybe you have even think about it.
We’re considering options around this at present. Thanks for your input, which is invaluable.

An algorithm that does exactly this is called Collaborative Filtering. Is something like this currently being developed?

Even a bare-bones, association web of some of the more popular films would be helpful.
I would like to see what movies people who like the same movies as me like.
are you still considering it because we still want it

I really don't understand how this is on top of user recommendations since 2011 and it's still not (at least partially) implemented 8 years later! Pleeeease :)
@Matthew This feature request is >7 years old!
Here is my recommendation: Do not implement an obscure blackbox algorithm! It is way better to have a transparent, easy tool for users to create their own algorithmic recommendations. I've been monitoring the market for a long time now... this is missing. Contact me if you like to have my thoughts on this.
yes please! this would be so useful!
I dont suppose there is an update on this?

Please work on this. It would be a core feature for the website.
Wow it's been 7 years since this suggestion was made and it's still not a feature. Such a good idea.
a site called movielens.org uses a great recommendations engine. Your database seems to have a lot more films and ratings, it would be a perfect feature.
Recommendations would be fantastic and I was extremely surprised when I downloaded Letterboxd that it didn't include them. Honestly, I am not sure what the benefit of the app is without them.
I would love to see recommended/similar lists based on any list (my own or other's list).
For example, if I created (Best Non-English Movies) list and based on movies on my list, it would recommend similar lists. Also, similarity could be based on a name of list or tags
The benefits of a similar list
I can be inspired by another list to create my own list.
I also help to like other people and follow their list.
Also, I can collaborate with another list to suggest movies on comment sections
merge with taste.io
I think it would be cool if all the Netflix original tv shoes were added. Also a recommendation section based on your highest ratings. I would also appreciate if you could save lists so that you don’t have to search them each time. Finally for all the films to have their release dates on the films page without being linked to another site.
If I've seen nearly all the films by a director / cinematographer / etc, it would be cool to get recommendations to finish off their filmography. Especially if I liked their other films.
I would say if you're going to do this, give people the option to not have recommendations appear or leave solely on the home page. I deleted previous apps similar to Letterboxd because the recommendations were a headache to sift through
I would love a weekly recommendations based on movies I rated - I don't see the point of me rating the movies if it doesn't lead to me getting suggestions based on those likes. I thought I was getting something like this when I went pro, but seemingly not. It's a bit of a hassle going through everybody's watch list and diary's to find movie recommendations. I am not interested in the social aspects of this or any platforms really, scrolling timelines of data is not that interesting to me, but I love movies and tips and keeping track of what I am watching.
Please add direct messaging to Letterboxd, as it's fun to talk about film with other members, and the only way to do it now is on comment sections of reviews or lists.

I love the MyAnimeList recommendation feature. They aggregate the number of recommendations for each title, and push the ones with the most recommendations to the top. For ex: https://myanimelist.net/anime/153/Juuni_Kokuki/userrecs
