Note you can rate a film directly from its poster, it's in the menu attached to the third icon when hovering on a poster.

We have different poster rules from TMDb, so we prefer to lock posters once films gain a level of popularity, to ensure long-term consistency.

We prefer original theatrical posters over DVD covers, which often get upvoted over there. If there is a theatrical release poster on TMDb that’s better than our one, we’ll often change it: please use the Report facility on the film and let us know.

AdminMatthew Buchanan (Admin, Letterboxd) commented  ·

Either way we can't do it. TMDb always shows English unless there is no English, but we don't know the language of the poster we receive, it's just the highest-rated in any language under the v2.1 API. When we tried auto-updating, half the English posters on the site were replaced with foreign versions.

When we switch to the v3 API, we get all posters and the language for each, so we can better choose which one to show. Sorry I don't have an ETA for this yet.

FB auto-posting is supported natively (see Settings → Connections).

Until we support Twitter natively, you can auto-post from your profile RSS feed by using IFTTT.com (search IFTTT.com’s site for Letterboxd → Twitter recipes).

AdminMatthew Buchanan (Admin, Letterboxd) commented  ·

@Damiano There's no auto-post feature. Until we have one, use the Share this Film/Review/List option in the right panel of those pages. Clicking the FB or Twitter icons under that option initiates the process to share to those services.

Apologies. Import takes some time and when the site is under load, it can time out. Please try again in 24 hours, and email us (help@letterboxd.com) if the issue persists. Also, you could try breaking your IMDb export file into smaller chunks which might help.

We do show the rating in list view, just not in grid view. Will look to add that if we can.

If this happens in future, please reply here with the exact search phrase and approximate time (plus timezone) that you performed the search. Thanks.

Hi, did you edit this review after posting it at all? If so, on what sort of browser/platform combination would you have edited it? This problem has not been reported by anyone else, which means it's probably not widespread, and could be related to something specific in your browser.

We are planning an email digest to notify you of friends reviews. If you're on the site, so you cna use the Incoming activity tab to see what actions have been performed on your content. In-site notifications are on the drawing board.

TMDb caches its API content for six hours, which means we can’t update changes any quicker than that. We do have a method to perform a manual import for new additions, and will continue to improve the importing process where we can. We are investigating a bug that’s causing the search index not to update, and some film updates not to come across.

AdminMatthew Buchanan (Admin, Letterboxd) commented  ·

@Mike Could you please try looking at those again and let me know if they’re updated? A full refresh has occurred at least once since we did our platform upgrade yesterday, which we believe should have fixed the broken import issue. If you spot changes which haven't imported, please let us know a few example film URLs.

We allow you to filter your Watchlist by Netflix availability if you’ve attached your Netflix account — I know that’s just one use-case but it seems to be the chief one you mention here Lise.

Also, adding a film to a list does not remove it from your Watchlist. Logging the film or marking it as watched (after adding it to the Watchlist) are the only actions that result in it being removed.

There is obviously room for improvement in the Watchlist, but just wanted to clear up these potential misunderstandings.

@Si We don't have a lot of information about differences between UK and US accounts. We use the US API calls to add films to your instant queue. If you can provide any information about what happens when attempting to add to a UK queue that may help, but no promises!

AdminMatthew Buchanan (Admin, Letterboxd) commented  ·

Could you post an example of a URL to a Netflix movie in the UK for comparison? Thanks.

AdminMatthew Buchanan (Admin, Letterboxd) commented  ·

@Mario. Interesting. We always output netflix.com URLs, so perhaps the UK site is redirecting you to a 404 as you're not able to see the same films as people in the US. What does your address bar say when you're on the 404 page?

It's basically an issue with incorrect caching of list numbers, which is why it resolves itself when the cache expires. Let me know if it persists.

There have been some updates to importing since this was posted. Have you tried a recent import, and did you strike the same issue?

We’ve completed the first stage of this, by changing the default diary view to a sortable table view. We’d love follow-up feedback on how useful this is, and if/how you’d like to see this view used elsewhere in the site.

AdminMatthew Buchanan (Admin, Letterboxd) commented  ·

Smart thinking Rob. In our original designs we had a grid/list toggle on several views and we ended up iterating away from it. I feel now that we’re a bit more sure of ourselves in these views, we should look to re-introduce that. As you say, it will obviate the need for a separate ratings tab at the least, which is a good thing. Stay tuned!

We pull every six hours, as that is how long TMDb’s API caches entries for. I’m not sure why artwork doesn’t come through, other than it may be a delay at TMDb’s end for some reason.

We are planning to add a mechanism to allow you to import films immediately if they are new additions to TMDb. We’ll hopefully get that into our upcoming release, if not it will follow shortly.

A good approach in theory, but the investment in time to implement it might not be the best use of our time. As more sites and people use TMDb, the quliaty of its data will improve. (I have a ticket in to add writers to our film listings.)

AdminMatthew Buchanan (Admin, Letterboxd) commented  ·

@Tony This is less likely since its purchase by Fanhattan, but of course if something like this were to happen, we’d be able to keep running based on our current list of films while we switched to an alternative data source.

@Tony There is a count of the number of times you’ve logged a film, it appears in the panel on the Film page and clicks through to a list of all diary entries. Might be useful to show this elsewhere?

Would you mind emailing the list you’re trying to import to help@letterboxd.com and we’ll do some testing on it locally. Thanks!
